Time for a Reel DEADPOOL & WOLVERINE review

About the film (courtesy of Marvel Studios):
A listless Wade Wilson toils away in civilian life. His days as the morally flexible mercenary, Deadpool, behind him. When his homeworld faces an existential threat, Wade must reluctantly suit-up again with an even more reluctantlier… reluctanter? Reluctantest? He must convince a reluctant Wolverine to—F*ck. Synopses are so f*cking stupid.

Hey, remember when Disney’s acquisition of, in part, 20th Century Fox sent ‘the internet’ in a frenzy over questions whether or not the mostly wholesome House of Mouse would allow for such gratuitous R-rated content to appear under its umbrella of somewhat morally restrained overall big business plan?

Well, thanks to a Marvel Deadpool franchise that came in sporting an almost 700 million dollar box office boner, there’s noooooo way that those in power over at The Walt Disney Company, especially the ones that revel in bottom line profits, would risk messing up a lucrative luxury such as this, right? RIGHT?!

Fears still existed even though Disney+, for example, started offering titles of the more mature variety, including some of its own original content. I’m here to tell you that Deadpool & Wolverine comes in, both fast and hard, with guns a-blazing, swords swinging and dialogue that might make a sailor blush!

The crazy thing is that I feel like the creators overcorrected so hard in hopes to prove that this is the same Merc with a Mouth that we’ve all come to love, that something else has been created instead…total f*cking awesomeness!

It’s no secret that Ryan Reynolds has been after Hugh Jackman since the two first worked together in X-Men Origins: Wolverine (2009) where audiences meet a much lesser prototype-ish version of Deadpool. This, of course, was years before Reynolds convinced 20th Century Fox to greenlight a standalone movie, and if you’ve seen the former, you’d really appreciate Reynolds power of persuasion and ability to sell an idea.

Anywho, with Wolverine’s well-known fate sealed in Logan 2017, you’d think the idea, without a reboot of some sort, would be a pipe dream. Well, thanks to the Multiverse and the TVA (Time Variance Authority, which is the backbone for the Loki tv series on Disney+), a “believable” story is made possible without getting too soap opera-centric.

Director/writer Shawn Levy absolutely nails it with Deadpool & Wolverine. Utilizing a brilliant script with the assistance of Reynolds and Rhett Reese, this story is as impervious as Wolverine’s Adamantium (strong metal for you non nerds out there) in terms how perfectly so much seemingly random content, fits into place. The obvious stars of the story are Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman, yet there are a plethora of valuable and entertaining performances throughout.

Deadpool & Wolverine is full of swearing and violence throughout, and yet it’s also filled with emotion and feeling at the same time. Maybe ‘and‘ is the biggest and most consistent descriptor here. Deadpool is exactly what you remember from the previous films with all of the R-rated bells and whistles that come with it. Wolverine brings the tough as nails, shitty attitude that you fondly remember from his X-Men movies along with the human depth and vulnerability that was featured in the old man Logan conclusion.

Deadpool & Wolverine brings with it an amazing supporting cast of characters that are very familiar in some fashion or form. Listen, if Reddit, Comic-Con and a random 12 year-old boy teamed up to make a feature length movie, based on all the things that go down over the 127 minute runtime, this might be it.

Marvel Studios Deadpool & Wolverine is glorious fun in every sense of the word. The ONLY negative thing about this film is that it had to end. And speaking of the end, make sure you stay put for the entirety of the credits. This film does not let anything go unutilized. From the opening credits until the auditorium lights turn back on, there’s something to keep audiences thoroughly engaged and entertained.

Welcome to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Deadpool & Wolverine. This has been a long time coming and well worth the wait. I can’t wait to see the box office records smashed and hopefully this effort serves as a return to form for the recently beleaguered overall franchise (film and television). Opening in theaters Friday, July 26th with obvious early showings on Thursday. Enjoy!!!
