Time for a Reel JOHN WICK: CHAPTER 4 review

About the film (courtesy of Lionsgate):
John Wick (Keanu Reeves) uncovers a path to defeating The High Table. But before he can earn his freedom, Wick must face off against a new enemy with powerful alliances across the globe and forces that turn old friends into foes.

A fourth chapter of the same fighting and killing?! Has John Wick finally overstayed his welcome? Never bet against the man, the myth, the legend, the Babayka (fun fact: the true Russian translation for bogeyman, not “Baba Yaga” as unfortunately flubbed in these movies).

Just like the title character, John Wick: Chapter 4 appears to have no real weaknesses in my eyes, granted I’m a JW fan through and through, so my perspective may be a tad bit skewed. I will admit that I wasn’t a huge fan upon learning of the weighty 169 runtime. Just like John’s fighting skills, the execution as been pretty much flawless this far with very little fluff to deal with. Each chapter has become increasing longer (101, 122, 130 minutes, respectively), but with good reason. What starts as a local story about a man, his wife and a dog, has blossomed into so much more.

John Wick: Chapter 4 takes the franchise to never before seen places and brings forth even more characters into the fray. Veteran actors such as Donnie Yen, Hiroyuki Sanada, Clancy Brown and Scott Adkins have been enlisted to bring additional firepower to a franchise that hasn’t had any issues bringing in perfect fits at each turn. Gifted the role of Baddie Number 1 is Bill Skarsgård, who continues to build an impressive résumé as portrays the ruthless Marquis. Shamier Anderson brings another interesting new character to this story.

Returning to the familiar fold to reprise their signature roles are Laurence Fishburne, Ian McShane, and the late Lance Reddick (rest in peace) who sadly passed away earlier this month. Keanu Reeves remains fully and completely dedicated to his craft and once again gives 110 percent at each and every turn. John Wick: Chapter 4 benefits from the example in which he leads allowing director Chad Stahelski to continue making adrenaline charged goosebumps and electric arm hair raising a natural occurrence as coming as everyday breathing.

John Wick: Chapter 4 stays true to what has made it one of the most consistent franchises in terms of quality and presentation in recent memory. Where this current film chooses to the take the titular character is anyone’s guess, but the one thing you can bank on for sure is that it’s going to be one helluva journey with a very high body count! And to make things even more exciting, no matter how this current chapter ends, there’s more to come in the John Wick Universe.

As of right now, a prequel miniseries titled The Continental is set to hit Peacock later this year. And if that’s not enough, Ballerina is a spin-off feature film starring Ana de Armas, Norman Reedus, Gabriel Byrne and several regulars you already know and love that’s currently in post-production. The future seems bright for this noir action thriller franchise.

As for John Wick: Chapter 4, this is definitely a must-see for anyone that has experienced the brilliance Chad Stahelski and Keanu Reeves have created thus far. This chapter may be slightly bloated (10 or 15 minutes could have been trimmed), but the overall execution is to die for. As John Wick famously says, “be seeing you…” only in theaters Friday, March 24 with early showtimes on Thursday starting at 3PM.

  1. I gave this a solid 3 and yes rest in peace to Lance Reddick!!

I liked it a lot. Ridiculously over the top and Keanu Reeves is, as usual, genuinely likeable as John Wick. I did love Scott Adkins here he was hilarious and was still quite spry in the prosthetics. The cast is amazing. Love Donnie Yen and Hiroyuki Sanada. Really great camerta work and LOL scenes. Bill Skarsgard is def one of my favorite villains these days!
