About the film (courtesy of Universal Pictures):
The murderous doll who captivated pop culture back in 2023 is back. And this time she’s not alone. Two years after M3GAN, a marvel of artificial intelligence, went rogue and embarked on a murderous (and impeccably choreographed) rampage and was subsequently destroyed, M3GAN’s creator Gemma has become a high-profile author and advocate for government oversight of AI. Meanwhile, Gemma’s niece Cady, now 14, has become a teenager, rebelling against Gemma’s overprotective rules. Unbeknownst to them, the underlying tech for M3GAN has been stolen and misused by a powerful defense contractor to create a military-grade weapon known as Amelia, the ultimate killer infiltration spy. But as Amelia’s self-awareness increases, she becomes decidedly less interested in taking orders from humans. Or in keeping them around.
It is hard to believe three years have passed since the initial theatrical release of M3GAN (2022). Director Gerard Johnstone’s venture into a world where artificial intelligence takes a terrifying turn was an unexpected sensation, captivating both critics and audiences alike. Little was anticipated from a film that, almost by chance, landed the challenging slot of a first-week-of-the-new-year release, a timeframe that historically rarely bodes well for cinematic success. Yet, countless rave reviews later, Universal Pictures undoubtedly celebrated the film’s enthusiastic reception and swiftly began envisioning its sequel.
With the core cast (Allison Williams, Violet McGraw, Brian Jordan Alvarez, Jen Van Epps, Jenna Davis) and director remaining intact, audiences now have the opportunity to delve deeper into the ramifications of some truly frightening technology. The highly anticipated follow-up, M3GAN 2.0, has received significant upgrades for enhanced viewing pleasure and is certainly ready to engage viewers. However, this time around, the central threat evolves, introducing a formidable military-grade weapon known as Amelia, poised to unleash chaos on its unsuspecting targets, promising a new layer of danger.
In terms of both its underlying tone and its overall execution, M3GAN 2.0 presents a distinctly different cinematic experience compared to its predecessor. A notable shift in this sequel is the substantial injection of humor, significantly elevating the comedic elements. It appears that a deliberate decision was made by key stakeholders to amplify the comedic presence, leading to a much lighter feel.
However, this increased comedic emphasis leads to a feeling of slight disingenuousness in categorizing this feature strictly as a horror film. While it certainly boasts moments of tension, its most intense sequences lean far more into the thriller genre. The outright scariness found in the original is largely absent, replaced by a more suspense-driven narrative that still aims to keep audiences on the edge of their seats.
Despite the liberal application of comedy and a noticeable lack of traditional horror elements, M3GAN 2.0 still manages to succeed remarkably well from an overall entertainment perspective. The film is packed with enough quality content to keep audiences thoroughly engaged, even with a runtime that extends approximately 18 minutes longer than its predecessor. This extended length feels justified, as it allows for deeper exploration of the story and characters.
There is an abundance of fun to be had throughout this sequel, and it is particularly refreshing to witness that Gerard Johnstone did not simply opt for a formulaic copy-and-paste approach from the first film. Instead, he demonstrates a willingness to take creative chances, allowing every character, whether artificial intelligence or human, to grow and adapt in response to the fresh challenges they encounter. This evolution contributes significantly to the film’s dynamic appeal.
M3GAN 2.0 carries a PG-13 rating, making it accessible to a wide audience. It is set to debut in theaters everywhere starting Friday, June 27th, offering a unique and entertaining cinematic outing that expands upon its universe in unexpected ways.
