Time for a Reel PROJECT HAIL MARY review

About the film (courtesy of Focus Features):
Based on Andy Weir’s (The Martian) novel of the same name, middle school science teacher Ryland Grace (Ryan Gosling) wakes up on a spaceship with no memory of who he is or how he got there. He must figure out how to complete his interstellar mission to save Earth from an astronomical catastrophe completely alone, until he meets a mysterious alien who has traveled light years to save his own species from the same fate.

The transition from page to screen is often a treacherous trek, but Project Hail Mary manages to stick the landing with the grace of a seasoned astronaut. Directed by the visionary duo Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, this adaptation of Andy Weir’s celebrated novel is far more than a technical exercise in survival; it is a sweeping symphony of emotion, compassion, and unyielding hope. From the opening frames, the story pulls the viewer into a high-stakes vacuum where it is remarkably easy to get lost within the immersive, high-concept world-building.

At the heart of this cosmic puzzle is Ryland Grace, played by Ryan Gosling in what can only be described as an outstanding performance. Gosling expertly balances the character’s intellectual brilliance with a palpable, bleeding vulnerability that makes his reluctance feel profoundly human. While his well-placed comedic timing provides the levity needed to keep the heavy stakes from becoming overbearing, it is his emotional transparency that will cause audiences to completely fall in love with the character.

However, Project Hail Mary truly finds its soul when Grace encounters an unexpected ally. James Ortiz delivers an equally solid and soulful performance as Rocky, an alien with goals that mirror Grace’s own desperate mission. The chemistry between these two—one human, one decidedly not—is the engine that drives the narrative forward. As they collaborate to solve an ostensibly impossible problem, their developing bond turns the audience into absolute putty in their hands. It is a testament to the storytelling that a relationship built across such a vast biological divide can feel so authentic and moving.

The collaboration between Lord, Miller, and screenwriter Drew Goddard proves to be a masterstroke. Goddard, who previously showed his “Weir-whispering” skills with The Martian (2015), once again distills complex science into a thrilling, accessible, and unforgettable cinematic experience. Project Hail Mary captures the spirit of the source material while carving out its own identity, much like the way Arrival (2016) used grand sci-fi themes to explore intimate connections.

Ultimately, Project Hail Mary succeeds because it prioritizes the heart over the hardware. It is a rare blockbuster that manages to be intellectually stimulating while remaining deeply personal. By focusing on the necessity of cooperation and the sheer power of friendship in the face of extinction, the filmmakers have crafted a modern masterpiece that will resonate during the long journey home.

Project Hail Mary sets forth on its mission to blissfully entertain the masses starting Friday, March 20th. Don’t miss this one.
