The Reel Godfather’s Top Films of 2021

In another challenging year (I was really hoping to not lead with this again), film studios are still trying to navigate the constantly changing waters due to the persistent pandemic threat. Even with the numbers trending in a disturbingly high direction right now, some films have flourished at a record-breaking level (I see you, Spider-Man: No Way Home), while some other quality films have seemingly tumbled down a hole of obscurity (In the Heights, West Side Story, King Richard). What needs to be realized, more than ever, is that the “underperformers” in the box office might be some of the most enjoyable experiences that you won’t want to miss out on. With that being said, here are ten of The Reel Godfather’s Top Films of 2021 with a few honorable mentions at the very bottom of the page that could have easily landed their way into the main list.

Free Guy

When a bank teller discovers he’s actually a background player in an open-world video game, he decides to become the hero of his own story — one that he can rewrite himself. In a world where there’s no limits, he’s determined to save the day his way before it’s too late, and maybe find a little romance with the coder who conceived him.

Cyrano

Cyrano de Bergerac dazzles everyone with his ferocious wordplay and brilliant swordplay. However, he’s convinced his appearance renders him unworthy of the affections of the luminous Roxanne, a devoted friend who’s in love with someone else.

Don’t Look Up

Two low-level astronomers must go on a giant media tour to warn mankind of an approaching comet that will destroy planet Earth.

In the Heights

In Washington Heights, N.Y., the scent of warm coffee hangs in the air just outside of the 181st St. subway stop, where a kaleidoscope of dreams rallies a vibrant and tight-knit community. At the intersection of it all is a likable and magnetic bodega owner who hopes, imagines and sings about a better life.

Zack Snyder’s Justice League

Fueled by his restored faith in humanity and inspired by Superman’s selfless act, Bruce Wayne enlists newfound ally Diana Prince to face an even greater threat. Together, Batman and Wonder Woman work quickly to recruit a team to stand against this newly awakened enemy. Despite the formation of an unprecedented league of heroes — Batman, Wonder Woman, Aquaman, Cyborg and the Flash — it may be too late to save the planet from an assault of catastrophic proportions.

Cruella

Estella is a young and clever grifter who’s determined to make a name for herself in the fashion world. She soon meets a pair of thieves who appreciate her appetite for mischief, and together they build a life for themselves on the streets of London. However, when Estella befriends fashion legend Baroness von Hellman, she embraces her wicked side to become the raucous and revenge-bent Cruella.

Spider-Man: No Way Home

For the first time in the cinematic history of Spider-Man, our friendly neighborhood hero’s identity is revealed, bringing his Super Hero responsibilities into conflict with his normal life and putting those he cares about most at risk. When he enlists Doctor Strange’s help to restore his secret, the spell tears a hole in their world, releasing the most powerful villains who’ve ever fought a Spider-Man in any universe. Now, Peter will have to overcome his greatest challenge yet, which will not only forever alter his own future but the future of the Multiverse.

Parallel Mothers

Two single women meet in a hospital room where they are both going to give birth. One is middle aged and doesn’t regret it, while the other is adolescent and scared. The two women form a strong bond with one another as they both confront motherhood.

Roadrunner: A Film About Anthony Bourdain

Filmmaker Morgan Neville examines the uncommon life of world-travelling chef, writer, and icon Anthony Bourdain, who lived his life unabashedly.

No Time to Die

James Bond is enjoying a tranquil life in Jamaica after leaving active service. However, his peace is short-lived as his old CIA friend, Felix Leiter, shows up and asks for help. The mission to rescue a kidnapped scientist turns out to be far more treacherous than expected, leading Bond on the trail of a mysterious villain who’s armed with a dangerous new technology.

**”Oh so close” films that just missed out on making the cut: The Matrix Resurrections, King Richard, Red Rocket, West Side Story and The Suicide Squad.**
