Time for a Reel AMERICAN UNDERDOG review

About the film (courtesy of Lionsgate):
American Underdog tells the inspirational true story of Kurt Warner (Zachary Levi), who went from a stockboy at a grocery store to a two-time NFL MVP, Super Bowl champion, and Hall of Fame quarterback. The film centers on Warner’s unique story and years of challenges and setbacks that could have derailed his aspirations to become an NFL player – but just when his dreams seemed all but out of reach, it is only with the support of his wife, Brenda (Anna Paquin) and the encouragement of his family, coaches, and teammates that Warner perseveres and finds the strength to show the world the champion that he already is. American Underdog is an uplifting story that demonstrates that anything is possible when you have faith, family and determination.

All Things Possible: My Story of Faith, Football, and the First Miracle Season is a book written by Hall of Fame NFL quarterback Kurt Warner. The autobiography was first published in 2000, and some two decades later after his storybook playing career has come to a close, there is now a major motion picture that chronicles his amazing story. To date, Kurt Warner is THE only player to be inducted into both the Pro Football Hall of Fame and the Arena Football Hall of Fame. Let that sink in for just a moment.

The Edwin Brothers, Andrew and Jon, had the pleasure of directing American Underdog. And they were also given the perfect gift in the casting of Zachary Levi to take on the role of this now historic real-life inspirational figure. To say that Kurt Warner came from humble beginnings would be an understatement. His rise to the top of the sports mountain was not without its share of crises of faith. And that is what makes for the ideal Hollywood story.

Zachary Levi, known for being a fun, charismatic character in the majority of his work, was born for this role. And the make-up team didn’t need to do all that much in order to favor Kurt Warner. From the opening moments of American Underdog, you can’t help but root for the guy. The groundwork is laid pretty much right away that this is a story that anyone can get behind.

Anna Paquin plays Brenda, Kurt’s love interest, and their chemistry is evident from the start. There are many people that play pivotal roles in the maturation of Kurt’s life and career. Ser’Darius Blain, Adam Baldwin, Bruce McGill, Chance Kelly and Dennis Quaid are some of the actors that help lock this part down. And little Hayden Zaller, who portrays Brenda’s son, Zack, is an absolute treat to watch and will warm your heart every time you see him.

At just under two hours, you’ll learn more about the man Kurt Warner is than you’d ever think you’d want to know. And probably once you’ve finished watching American Underdog, you might go off and do some additional research on your own. This film is inspiring and is the perfect gift for this time of year.

Whether you are a football fanatic, casual fan or someone that has never seen a game in your life, American Underdog transcends all of that and positions itself as simply a feel-good movie that the entire family can enjoy. You will come away with all of the warm and fuzzies along with the reminder that with the proper attitude, willingness to put in the work and a strong faith, there is little that cannot be accomplished. Kurt Warner is living, breathing proof of this and his story deserves to be told.

American Underdog opens in theaters only with limited late afternoon and early evening showings on December 24, everywhere on Christmas Day.
