Time for a Reel DEADPOOL 2 review

It took Ryan Reynolds ten whole years of begging, pleading and scheming before Twentieth Century Fox FINALLY gave in and greenlit the project that Reynolds had been so passionate about. Deadpool (2016) went on to amass an astounding almost $800 million worldwide, becoming the top grossing R-rated ever! And against a miniscule budget of under $60 million, Fox would absolutely be fast tracking a sequel. In a day and age where Disney seemingly holds all the seats at the big table, the “Merc with a mouth” might have a few things to say about that. A little more than two years later, Deadpool 2 is having its second coming and looks to be nothing less than absolutely glorious.

Wade Wilson, aka Deadpool (Ryan Reynolds), is still the mercenary for hire, and baddies hope to never end up on his hit list. Not much has changed with good ole DP from when we last saw him. He still works out of Weasel’s (T.J. Miller) bar, which is a haven for hitmen. Being taxied around by his personal chauffeur, Dopinder (Karan Soni) is still his number one mode of transportation. And no surprise here, Vanessa (Morena Baccarin) is still around as his better half. All seems good in the world until a recent misstep by DP brings misfortune right to his doorstep. And when fate comes knocking, there isn’t much you can do but accept the outcome.

DP’s life is shattered once again, leading him on another path to self-enlightenment. With the help of an old acquaintance, he must pick up the pieces and forge a path ahead to once again help those in need. This will lead him to a fiery kid named Russell (Julian Dennison), a few new potential allies and the mysterious Cable (Josh Brolin) who appears to be more than up for the challenge to take on our damaged hero. Unless you know the written stories tied to this plot, aka the comics, you’re going to be in for many surprises. Deadpool 2 puts in maximum effort.

There’s no way to beat around the bush here. Deadpool 2 is amazeballs!! Everything that made the first movie such a surprise delight is present and accounted for, AND IMPROVED! It’s often very difficult to one-up something that had the element of surprise behind it. I think a lot of the paying public had no idea what they were getting when the first Deadpool blew our collective socks off. The sequel comes with high expectations and it reaches just about every one of those. Once again, the witty writing is absolutely genius and nothing, I mean NOTHING, is off of the table when it comes to subjects that may be made fun of. Ryan Reynolds is 100% on point with all of his humor and his collaboration with writers Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick bared the fruit of the comic gods. It’s literally laugh after laugh after laugh for almost two hours.

Just like with “another” Marvel movie recently released, Josh Brolin portrays a very impactful character. The man knows how to play a tough as nails character to perfection. If anyone decides to start remaking a string of Clint Eastwood classics, this man has my unwavering support. As mentioned earlier, there are a few familiar faces returning, some pretty good cameos and a few more solid additions as new characters. Deadpool 2 just hits on all cylinders leaving very little in terms of squandered opportunities.

With all of the massiveness that Marvel’s Avengers: Infinity War brings with it to the movie experience, one could argue that Deadpool 2 is an overall more enjoyable experience. You CANNOT go wrong in checking this one out in theaters this weekend, well unless you’re planning on bringing a younger child…then it’s really wrong. This movie is incredibly rated R so don’t even think about it. If you’re looking to have a crazy fun wild time in theaters, definitely check this out in theaters starting Thursday, May 17th at 7:00PM. I’ll definitely be back for seconds!
