Time for a Reel DUNE: PART TWO review

About the film (courtesy of Warner Bros.):
Dune: Part Two will explore the mythic journey of Paul Atreides as he unites with Chani and the Fremen while on a path of revenge against the conspirators who destroyed his family. Facing a choice between the love of his life and the fate of the known universe, he endeavors to prevent a terrible future only he can foresee.

Denis Villeneuve’s Dune: Part One (2021) left audiences stunned by its visual spectacle and intricate adaptation of Frank Herbert’s sprawling universe. Dune: Part Two surpasses expectations, delivering a cinematic tour de force that cements this duology as a modern sci-fi masterpiece.

While the first film focused on introductions and world-building, Dune: Part Two detonates an explosion of action, intrigue, and profound character development. Paul Atreides (Timothée Chalamet), haunted by terrifying visions of a jihad enacted in his name, navigates the treacherous web of politics and prophecy. His transformation from reluctant young heir to hardened messiah figure is electrifying, Chalamet infusing Paul with both vulnerability and chilling resolve.

Zendaya’s Chani, given more depth here, is Paul’s fierce and loving counterpart. The stark beauty of Arrakis remains a vital character, the film reveling in breathtaking vistas and the terrifying might of the colossal sandworms. However, the focus shifts away from the spice towards the intricate power plays between the Great Houses, the insidious Emperor, and the indomitable Fremen.

New characters add incredible layers of complexity. Florence Pugh’s Princess Irulan, both pawn and political strategist, brings a tragic elegance, while Austin Butler’s Feyd-Rautha exudes a predatory menace that makes him an unforgettable villain. Rebecca Ferguson’s Lady Jessica and Javier Bardem’s Stilgar have their arcs amplified, showcasing the internal strife and hardened resilience of individuals caught in a cosmic whirlwind.

Visually, Dune: Part Two is astonishing. Villeneuve masterfully combines the vastness of the desert with claustrophobic interiors where political duels unfold. Hans Zimmer’s score is a haunting, ethereal force – otherworldly choral work and percussive thunder enhance every pivotal scene.

Dune: Part Two‘s pacing can be slightly uneven in its first half, as numerous plotlines converge. However, the payoff is a heart-pounding action-packed finale that will leave audiences reeling. The battle sequences are less about bombast and more about tactical warfare and the awe-inspiring nature of Fremen fighters. The final confrontation between Paul and Feyd-Rautha is brutal, visceral, and utterly gripping.

Dune: Part Two isn’t a casual watch – its density mirrors the source material, demanding attention and rewarding reflection. Themes of colonialism, resource exploitation, the dangers of chosen ones, and the manipulation of faith are woven deeply into its tapestry.

Villeneuve has crafted a film that is simultaneously a blockbuster and a work of art. Dune: Part Two elevates its source material, ending on a note that’s both a satisfying conclusion to this saga, and a thrilling, heartbreaking promise for a future yet to be unraveled.

Hopefully the powers-that-be see enough potential to keep this franchise, in its current form, going to explore the next novel. Dune: Part Two is a 165 minute passionate piece gifted by Denis Villeneuve that deserves to be experienced on the big screen. See this epic conclusion only in theaters starting Friday, March 1st.
