Time for a Reel LIGHTYEAR review

About the film (courtesy of Disney • PIXAR):
The sci-fi action-adventure presents the definitive origin story of Buzz Lightyear—the hero who inspired the toy—introducing the legendary Space Ranger who would win generations of fans.

Lightyear is a spin-off of the VERY successful and well-received Toy Story franchise that also serves as an origin story for the most prominent character outside of Woody (voiced by Tom Hanks). When this project was first announced, there was initial confusion and conversation as to why Tim Allen wasn’t returning to reprise his signature voice acting of “Space Ranger” toy, Buzz Lightyear. We soon learned more about the trajectory of this new project and how it centered on the hero that inspired the toy. So all was right in the world with bringing Chris Evans into the fold.

Disney • PIXAR follows a familiar recipe for success in their expansion of the very lucrative franchise that captured the hearts and imaginations of so many. Lightyear brings a deeper emotional connection to Buzz (voiced by Chris Evans) and all that he endures in his life while trying to be the hero that others saw in him.

Lightyear is an emotional crowd pleaser that will keep the littles and the bigs engaged throughout its perfectly balanced 100 minute runtime. Stepping up to their respective microphones to compliment Chris Evans are Keke Palmer, Peter Sohn, James Brolin, Dale Soules, Uzo Aduba, Mary McDonald-Lewis, Efren Ramirez, Isiah Whitlock Jr. and the always entertaining Taika Waititi in supporting roles.

While Toy Story seemingly had more established names on its roster of voice talent, this new group is nothing to scoff at. Many chuckles will be had at their collective expense throughout. Director Angus MacLane brings the laughs as well as the emotional weight that assists in guiding audiences to also invest their feelings into this feature.

While the overall experience of Lightyear is a positive one, you can’t help but ask yourself, “did we really need a spin-off of this franchise?” Especially considering how well Woody’s story was wrapped up by the time Toy Story 4 (2019) concluded. I’m not crying, you’re crying! I digress.

After experiencing this feature in theaters, I can’t help but wonder if this would have been better suited for a Disney+ release. I’m sure it’ll do well in theaters, but Disney’s budding home streaming service might have been a more suitable launching pad for this. At any rate, Lightyear is entertaining enough to make you not regret seeing it in theaters. It just isn’t on the same playing field as the franchise that started this all. You can check it only in theaters right now.
