Time for a Reel MARRY ME review

About the film (courtesy of Universal Pictures):
Musical superstar Kat Valdez (Jennifer Lopez) and Charlie Gilbert (Owen Wilson), a math teacher are total strangers who agree to marry and then get to know each other. An unlikely romance about two different people searching for something real in a world where value is based on likes and followers, Marry Me is a modern love story about celebrity, marriage and social media.

Marry Me is the feel-good film that just about anyone can use in their lives just in time for Valentine’s Day. All of the ingredients are present and accounted for to set the perfect mood for a two-hour long, modern-day fairytale. Laughs, love and some music to move to, it’s all there in plentiful portions. This one might take you by surprise in just how much you’re going to enjoy getting to these characters while hoping for a happy ending.

While Jennifer Lopez and Owen Wilson create some undeniably cute chemistry, Marry Me is not solely reliant on its “top two” headliners. The secondary and supporting cast has as much to do with this surprisingly complete experience as anyone. Latin music sensation, Maluma, John Bradley, Michelle Buteau, Sarah Silverman and a young star on the rise, Chloe Coleman, all come together to provide something that you didn’t know you were missing until seeing this movie.

Director Kat Coiro slays her job in orchestrating a, rather predictable and somewhat cheesy at times, rom-com into a movie that everyone watching becomes emotionally invested in while rooting for the happy ending its characters deserve. In many ways, Marry Me is an unexpected breath of fresh air that you didn’t see coming, much like Trainwreck (2015), Long Shot (2019), and if you want to sprinkle in a music with your emotions, High Note (2020). All predictable outcomes but our hearts were warmed just the same.

There’s really nothing not to like about this one. And after missing two previous targeted release dates last year, we finally get to be a part of this nontraditional love story that will chip away at the most stoic of people. If you’re looking for a little romantic appetizer this weekend, Marry Me opens in theaters on Friday with early evening showings on Thursday. And if you’re a subscriber of Peacock, you can just sit back and relax, order dinner in and enjoy streaming this feature in the comfort of your own home.
