Time for a Reel OVERLORD review

Whenever J.J. Abrams’ name is attached to a product, you just really never know what you’re going to be in for. One thing is for certain though, his works usually end up be a fun time for all in the theater. Ever since his early days on television as the mind behind ABC’s Lost hit series, we’ve known that his creativity and imagination are next level. There has even been speculation that Overlord is somehow connected to the “Cloververse”, which is a term that has been born from three of his mysterious loosely connected sci-fi films, Cloverfield (2008), 10 Cloverfield Lane (2016) and The Cloverfield Paradox (2018). What surprises will audiences be in for with this latest movie?

During a pivotal point of World War II, US armed forces are about to carry out a mission in Nazi-occupied France. Their goal is to parachute into a hostile environment and disable a radio tower so that Allied Forces can carry out their ultimate plan to flood the area with war planes and troops. Things don’t go as planned as most of their deployment team is lost upon arrival. Ford (Wyatt Russell), Boyce (Jovan Adepo), Tibbet (John Magaro) and a few others touchdown successfully and are essentially on their own to complete the mission. The group happens upon a local girl (Mathilde Ollivier) and must rely on her if they are to press on successfully. They soon find out, however, that the Nazi regime is performing experiments on the locals and captured soldiers that cannot be easily explained.

While fighting for their lives as they are out-manned and out-gunned at every turn, they must cast aside any fear so that they can put an end to this unnatural evil that is plaguing the area. Overlord is set to get crazy real quick and take audiences along for the ride.

In terms of wild imaginative fun, Overlord does not disappoint. It takes a pretty mundane WWII subplot and infuses it will Nazi experimentation that is pure insanity. The story is extremely far fetched but it’s also fun, in the way that playing a first-person shooter like Wolfenstein or Doom is fun. Actually those two video game titles aren’t far off from what you’ll get here. This is only the second feature length title from director Julius Avery (Son of a Gun (2014)), but he must be doing something right since he’s been tipped to be helming the Flash Gordon reboot. He brings a risky fun bravado that audiences seem to gravitate to.

While not relying on big names, Overlord represents Jovan Adepo, Wyatt Russell, Mathilde Ollivier, Iain De Caestecker and John Magaro. This is an absolutely non-historically correct action horror piece that is out to entertain you for two hours. While there are a few things that make this movie less enjoyable than it could have been, for the most part it does its job. As for whether or not the rumor is true regarding this being a part of the “Cloververse”, you’ll just have to see the movie and decide for yourself.
