Time for a Reel THE BOYS IN THE BOAT review

About the film (courtesy of Amazon MGM Studios):
A sports drama about the 1936 University of Washington rowing team that competed for gold at the Summer Olympics in Berlin. This inspirational true story follows a group of underdogs at the height of the Great Depression as they are thrust into the spotlight and take on elite rivals from around the world.

Based on the bestselling book of the same name, The Boys in the Boat tells the inspiring story of the University of Washington rowing team’s journey to gold at the 1936 Berlin Olympics. Directed by George Clooney, the film boasts a strong cast and a heartwarming narrative, but it ultimately falls short of greatness due to its uneven pacing and lack of depth.

The Boys in the Boat follows Joe Rantz (Callum Turner), a young man from the working class who joins the rowing team despite having no prior experience. With the help of their coach, Al Ulbrickson (Joel Edgerton), Joe and his teammates overcome personal obstacles and financial hardships to become one of the most successful rowing teams in history.

The film’s greatest strength is its emotional core. The story of these young men overcoming adversity to achieve their dreams is truly inspiring. The film also does a good job of capturing the camaraderie and teamwork that is essential to any rowing team.

However, The Boys in the Boat is also hampered by its uneven pacing. The first half of the film feels slow and meandering, while the second half rushes through the team’s Olympic journey. The film also lacks depth in its portrayal of the characters. We never really get to know the characters on a personal level, which makes it difficult to connect with them on an emotional level.

Despite its flaws, The Boys in the Boat is a heartwarming and inspiring film. It is a story of hope, perseverance, and the power of teamwork. While it may not be a perfect film, it is one that is sure to leave a lasting impression. Amazon MGM Studios had better hope for an infusion of interest from a slightly older demographic, otherwise this release could be under water in no time.

The Boys in the Boat is exclusively in theaters starting December 25.
